Seasoned Dutchess County Business Owners Discuss Secrets of Their Success
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (June 15, 2010) Dutchess County’s most successful entrepreneurs will share secrets of their success including low-cost marketing and sales tactics at a June 22nd event organized by the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC).
The event will be held on Tuesday June 22 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. at Associated Aircraft Group 32 Griffith Way in Wappingers Falls. “In today's economy, many businesses are seeking ways to increase their business and boost sales. We are boiling down years of experience by a panel of local experts,” said DCEDC President and CEO John MacEnroe.
MacEnroe will moderate the panel entrepreneurs including: Tom McQuade, President of Associated Aircraft Group, Jason Page, General Partner of Page Park Associates, Neal Johnsen, V.P. of Sales at Stanfordville Machine and Manufacturing Company and Lisa Morris, Senior Director of Business Development and Marketing for The Chazen Companies .

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (MAY 26, 2010) Economic development is moving forward in Dutchess County, despite the fact that it is in a holding pattern in many areas of the state and nation, according to Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) President and CEO John MacEnroe.
Recent gains and future opportunities will be spotlighted at the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation’s Annual Breakfast on June 10 at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. The Sky’s the Limit Breakfast runs from 7:30—9:00 a.m.
“We are consistently receiving calls from companies considering relocating to Dutchess County,” said MacEnroe.
Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus echoed this point at a recent Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce Breakfast. Steinhaus said the county has $2 billion in long-term economic development projects in the pipeline. “We are attractive to manufacturing, technology and renewable energy companies due to our proximity to New York City, easy access to I-87 and I-84, and highly-skilled workforce,” said MacEnroe.
“My colleagues are also very busy working with companies already in Dutchess to keep them here and to grow and prosper. Economic development is often viewed as a barometer of long-term financial investment and growth. When the number of projects increase and come to completion, we see the results in more jobs, lower taxes and better quality of life,” said MacEnroe.

The Hudson Valley Center for Innovation (HVCFI), a virtual technology accelerator, is holding the breakfast event on Wednesday September 23rd from 8:00-10:00 a.m. at the Seven21 Media Center located at 721 Broadway in Kingston.
“Community colleges play a pivotal role in developing a renewable energy industry in the Hudson Valley. We wanted to have ‘a meeting of the minds’ intended to encourage collaboration and innovation,” said Les Neumann, HVCFI managing director.
According to Neumann, HVCFI's Entrepreneurs Breakfast Series roundtable participants will include Ulster County Community College President Dr. Don Kott, Dr. Cliff Wood representing Rockland Community College, Dr. Ellen Galligan from Sullivan Community College and Dr. Bill Richards representing Orange County Community College and Dr. Andres Fortino from NYU Polytechnic University. The panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Arthur Anthonisen who currently serves as the Chairman of the Association of Community College Trustees and a longtime local resident.
The breakfast will also feature a presentation by Don Perry who will provide an update on the progress of the WindPower Initiative and Les Neumann who will give a presentation on what he calls “Incentivitis – How can Small Business Compete.”

Community colleges to help turn Hudson Valley epicenter of wind energy development
LAKE KATRINE, N.Y. (APRIL 22, 2009) In honor of Earth Day, the Hudson Valley Center for Innovation (HVCFI), the region’s nonprofit virtual technology accelerator will launch its new Wind Power Initiative (WPI) at its upcoming Entrepreneurs Breakfast on April 22 in the Lake Katrine location. The breakfast takes place between 8-10 a.m. at 703 Grant Avenue in Lake Katrine.
Les Neumann, managing director of the HVCFI, said the initiative will be an addition to the non-profits current Cleantech Accelerator Program (CAP) started in 2007. Foreign and domestic companies are already participating in HVCFI’s Cleantech Accelerator Program (CAP) and have joined the wind power initiative. Some of the CAP technologies currently growing under the mentorship of the HVCFI include: solar, hydrogen, pollution control and wind. The impetus for a dedicated WPI arose due to the increasing number of wind turbine technologies that had applied to the CAP and required more focused attention.
“The timing is right. The Hudson Valley is suited to become the global epicenter of distributed wind energy development,” said Don Perry, LEED-AP, a green business strategist and consultant to the WPI. “The WPI will concentrate exclusively on late stage-technology development (full-scale pilot deployment), research, testing, siting, data acquisition and analysis leading to the certification of wind energy systems focusing specifically on small wind, (wind turbines in the 1kW to 100kW range) and medium wind (wind turbines from 100kW up to utility scale 2mW) technologies. “The HVCFI has formed a significant knowledge base of technical expertise in the area of small and medium wind technology, business commercialization and intellectual property development,” Perry said.
The WPI plans to conduct wind turbine training, testing and analysis at selected community colleges throughout the Hudson Valley, including Sullivan, Orange, and Ulster, along with its primary academic partner, the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. Les Neumann stated that; “The goal is to provide students with real world experience working with real wind energy systems and help them become expert in their design, installation, testing, and maintenance, as well as helping to push the technology envelope further and create new wind turbine generators of even greater power production, efficiency and cost competitiveness. Moreover, for companies that participate, the WPI provides an excellent introduction to the potential of the Hudson Valley as a location which is in close proximity to the largest concentration of end-users (New York City and the Northeast corridor), has a qualified and trained workforce and is ready to support manufacturing, distribution and headquarters facilities,” said Neumann.

A major thrust of the WPI will be establishing test bed facilities throughout the region to assist developers in meeting new Small Wind Certification protocols that will be announced shortly by the American Wind Energy Association. Becoming AWEA certified is a critical component, towards sanctioning products and services to be sold here in the United States and globally. The WPI is a cornerstone initiative and outcropping of the Hudson Valley Center for Innovation that can rapidly matriculate to full scale commercialization including manufacturing, distribution, workforce and economic development for the region.

Jeff Peterson, NYSERDA program manager for energy resources, will discuss how to grow clean energy businesses. Peterson manages the primary research program for renewable and natural gas resources for NYSERDA.
NYSERDA partners with businesses in New York to create new technologies that can be used around the world. Peterson's program supports workforce training as well as development of products and services in New York that meet customer demand for renewable energy around the world.
"There are a tremendous number of opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses in our region to create products, services and support for the renewable energy market. On September 15, HVCFI announced the creation of the Cleantech Acceleration Program (CAP™) which is specifically designed to assist clean tech, green tech, alternative and renewable emerging energy enterprises bring their products or services to market in an accelerated time frame.
"NYSERDA plays a key role in the development of alternative and renewable energies developed right here in the Hudson Valley. Last fall, one of HVCFI's licensees, AeroCity LLC, received a $1 million grant from NYSERDA to continue research and development of its wind turbine designed for use in urban settings," said Neumann.

"We are facing a multitude of critical and complex issues from growth at Stewart Airport to attempts to control growth near Bellaeyre Mountain," said Drapkin, whose organization has tracked growth in the Hudson Valley for nearly 45 years.
"The population is aging and the middle class is moving out. Technology companies play an important role in the region's ability to survive and thrive," said Drapkin.

LAKE KATRINE, N.Y. (January 23, 2008) Prism Solar Technologies, Inc. (PST) has moved into 2,500 square of office space at the at the Hudson Valley Center for Innovation to grow its core team and develop a long-term manufacturing strategy.
"Prism and the Solar Energy Consortium are working closely together as it sets its long-term strategy," said Vincent Cozzolino, CEO the Solar Energy Consortium.
"The space located at the Hudson Valley Center for Innovation provides a perfect environment for our expected quick growth. There is a natural flow for early stage companies to start at the Center of Innovation and then seek manufacturing space at TechCity," said Rick Lewandowski, CEO of Prism Solar Technologies, Inc.
Prism Solar Technologies, Inc. is expected to grow to 20 employees at the Hudson Valley Center for Innovation, according to Lewandowski.

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (October 19, 2007) United States Senator Hillary Clinton has endorsed Democratic and Working Families candidate Jonathan Sennett for Ulster County District Attorney.
"Jonathan Sennett's experience as a tough prosecutor in the Bronx and a seasoned defense attorney in the Hudson Valley make him the best choice for Ulster County District Attorney," said Senator Clinton.

RHINEBECK, N.Y. (September 5, 2007) The Sixth Annual Hudson Valley Food and Wine Festival will offer people from around the tri-state area samples from 50 wineries and dishes from the region’s top restaurants. The three-day event runs from Friday September 6 through Sunday, September 8 at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck.
“This has become a premier event in the Northeast for those who enjoy and appreciate good wine and good food. Rhinebeck is the perfect place to have this late-summer festival,” said event organizer Michael Babcock, president of festival sponsor WineRacks.com.
The event will begin with a Grand Reserve Tasting on Friday September 6 from 6-9 p.m. “Guests can sip wonderful vintages from wineries from around New York state and for nominal fee can sample spectacular signature dishes from the region’s top chefs,” said Babcock.
